BLK 3 Pinot Noir was planted in 2006. The wine is intended to taste of place and vintage in a transparent, unadorned fashion using minimalist viticulture and winemaking. While 2009 was a cool year, we experienced a long, warm fall. Our vineyard escaped the early Sept frost, and leaves stayed on well into October allowing further ripening. On Oct 2, 1.6 tons were hand harvested, and the grapes destemmed without crushing. Overall harvest chemistry was 21 brix, 2.89 pH and 9.1 g/L Total acidity. Fermentation was finished on Oct 12, and 103 gallons of free run and 18 gallons of press wine were produced. On Oct 27, the free run was racked into an older French barrel and went through malo-lactic fermentation naturally. The long, lovely autumn continued and an additional 250 lbs of ripe grapes were harvested on Nov 1, 14 and 29! On Nov 19 a second barrel was filled.
