Vintage Notes 2014

Despite a harsh winter, a cool spring and a wet summer, a warm, sunny and very dry autumn allowed the 2014 vintage to be much better than expected.  The record-breaking low temperatures during the winter resulted in some vine damage that decreased our overall production.  Due to the cold spring, budbreak arrived about a week late in mid-May and the summer was slow to warm up.  We had more rain than we wanted in August but then the fall conditions became perfect.  The warm, dry and sunny weather through September and October gave the fruit the opportunity to catch up on ripening and, with our typically later harvest down near the lake, we ended up with a remarkably good vintage. Riesling and our our other white varieties were able to fully ripen, resulting in wines that will have a racy acidity that is expressive of the cooler vintage.
